There are definitely starting to be days with a springtime feel, which is exciting. It’s a good reminder that the new summer season is fast approaching, and we’re looking forward to seeing more of our surf sports athletes back on the beach and around the club.
A big thank you to everyone who came along to the Surf Sports Get‑Together on Sunday 30 August at the club house. It was awesome to share the mahi that’s been happening over winter, both the prep for the season ahead and the work going into shaping the future of surf sports at MBSLSC. The slide presentation from the evening is available here, and if you’re planning ahead, slide 9 has all the key dates for the upcoming season.
Last weekend we had a team of 27 athletes competing at the Northern Region Pool Rescue Champs at NAC. It really was a full club effort, with athletes, coaches, managers, parents, supporters and wider members all playing a part in making the weekend run smoothly. A warm welcome to Macy H, who raced in Mairangi Bay colours for the first time, great to have you in the team Macy.
Our athletes should be proud of how they carried themselves and the effort and focus they brought to racing for the club. It was awesome hearing and seeing athletes supporting each other and the juniors , as well as working closely with Tom and Josh to get the most out of every race. What made the weekend even better was the feedback we received from Northern Region SLS. They commented on how positive and pleasant it was to interact with our team, athletes, coaches, managers, officials, water support, timekeepers, everyone from MBSLSC! That’s something we value as a club, and it’s awesome to see it recognised. Good work, team!
There were plenty of standout performances across the meet. Coach shout‑outs went to Sophie S, Jamie D, Oscar D and Blake B for exceptional meets, especially impressive given it was their step up into the senior ranks. We also had some huge results worth celebrating: Rae K touched in an astronomical 1:06.59 in the 100m Rescue Medley, Zoe C set a new standard in the 100m Carry with Fins, and we saw record‑breaking swims in the Open Women’s Medley Relay, the Open Women’s Manikin Relay and the Open Men’s Manikin Relay.
