Junior development squad

What is the Junior Development Squad?

The Junior Development Squad (JDS) is an optional add-on to our Sunday Club Day programme, which is a great way for ‘Nippers’ to get more exposure to Junior Surf. JDS sessions provide a fun, challenging and safe environment for children to further hone their skills, knowledge and experience in all areas of Junior Surf Lifesaving. All aspects of Junior Surf are covered (except first aid training) including land- and water-based surf activities and lifeguarding theory.
At JDS, children are grouped according to their skills and ability and are provided with support and coaching tailored to their needs by our qualified and experienced coaches.

Who can attend JDS?

JDS is open to all children aged 10-14 (B and C group) who are active members of MBSLSC.
Children must be confident swimmers and hold a 200m Safety Badge to attend JDS, but beyond that all skill levels are catered for from beginners wanting to develop their skills through to more experienced surf athletes looking to excel at surf carnivals (competitions).
JDS is designed to complement our Sunday Club Day programme. Children must attend a minimum of five Sunday Club Day sessions over the summer season to participate in JDS.

When is JDS on?

Two semesters of JDS are run each summer. Semester one runs from September to Christmas and semester two from January until just before Easter.
Five JDS sessions generally run per week at MBSLSC. Children can attend as many or as few sessions as they like, but it is not recommended that they attend all five sessions a week because recovery time is important.
